Who Made the First Accurate World Maps?

The question of who made the first accurate world maps has no single answer, because “accurate” can mean many different things. A map can be accurate in the relative position of continents, in the shape of coastlines, in the location of cities, or in the projection of the spherical Earth onto a flat surface. Different maps have excelled in different ways, and the history of accurate world mapping is a long one, stretching from ancient Babylon to the Renaissance and beyond. The argument of this page: the first “accurate” world maps were the product of a long inheritance, not a single breakthrough. The mathematical framework came from the ancient Greeks, refined by the Islamic world. The empirical coastline data came from the portolan pilots. The new continental outlines came from the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and English voyages. Each tradition contributed, and the world map as we know it was assembled from these contributions over several centuries.

The Earliest World Maps

The earliest known world maps date to ancient Babylon, where clay tablets from the ninth century BCE depict the world as a flat disk surrounded by a circular sea. These maps were mythological rather than practical, and they had no influence on the development of accurate cartography. The ancient Greeks developed the idea of a spherical Earth and the coordinate system of latitude and longitude that became the foundation of all subsequent world mapping. By the second century BCE, Eratosthenes had calculated the circumference of the Earth with remarkable accuracy, and Hipparchus had developed the system of latitude and longitude that we still use today.

Ptolemy’s Geographia

The most important ancient text on world mapping is the Geographia of Claudius Ptolemy, written in Alexandria around 150 CE. The Geographia is a comprehensive treatise on mathematical geography, including instructions for drawing maps of the entire known world using a coordinate system of latitude and longitude. Ptolemy’s text included a list of places with their coordinates, instructions for several map projections, and a set of regional and world maps. The Geographia was lost to Western Europe in the early Middle Ages but survived in Arabic translation. It was recovered by Latin scholars in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and was first printed in 1475.

Ptolemy’s maps were highly influential, but they contained significant errors. Ptolemy underestimated the circumference of the Earth — an error derived from the earlier Greek geographer Posidonius, whose value displaced the more accurate measurement of Eratosthenes — and he exaggerated the eastward extent of Asia. These errors led fifteenth-century Europeans, including Christopher Columbus, to underestimate the westward distance from Europe to Asia. Despite these errors, Ptolemy’s Geographia established the principles of mathematical cartography and the conventions of latitude and longitude that are still in use today. Al-Idrisi and the Islamic Tradition

While Ptolemy’s work was lost to the Latin West, the Islamic world preserved and extended the Greek geographic tradition. The most important medieval Islamic world map was the Tabula Rogeriana of al-Idrisi, drawn in 1154 for the Norman king Roger II of Sicily. The Tabula Rogeriana depicted the world on a flat disk with south at the top, and it showed the major continents, seas, and mountain ranges with remarkable care. Al-Idrisi drew on the geographic knowledge of the Islamic world, the reports of Arab and Persian travelers, and the surviving Greek tradition. The Tabula Rogeriana is among the most important medieval world maps, and it was the high point of Islamic cartography.

Other important Islamic cartographers included al-Biruni, who in the eleventh century developed methods for measuring latitude and longitude and who wrote on the rotation of the Earth; Ibn Battuta, the great fourteenth-century traveler whose accounts provided rich geographic information; and Piri Reis, the Ottoman admiral and cartographer who drew a famous world map of 1513 that included the coast of the Americas based on Columbus’s voyages.

Fra Mauro and the European Tradition

In Christian Europe, the tradition of world mapping was maintained through the Middle Ages by monks and scholars, who produced various T-O maps, mappaemundi, and other symbolic representations. The most important of these was the mappamundi of Fra Mauro, drawn around 1450 in the monastery of San Michele in Murano, near Venice. Fra Mauro’s mappamundi was a large, detailed circular map of the world, drawing on the geographic knowledge of the European, Islamic, and Asian traditions. It included accounts of African exploration by Portuguese pilots and references to the travels of Marco Polo and other Europeans. Fra Mauro’s mappamundi is sometimes called the “last of the medieval world maps” and is among the most important documents in the history of cartography.

The Cantino and Waldseemüller Maps

The first modern world maps were produced in the generation after Columbus’s voyages, drawing on the new geographic information pouring in from the Spanish and Portuguese explorations. The Cantino Planisphere of 1502 was a Portuguese world map that depicted the African coast in detail, showed the line of the Treaty of Tordesillas, and included the coast of Brazil. The Universalis Cosmographia of Martin Waldseemüller, printed in 1507, was the first map to depict the Americas as a separate continent and the first to apply the name “America” to the New World. These two maps, together with the work of the Portuguese cartographer Pedro Reinel and the German cartographer Johannes Ruysch, mark the foundation of modern world cartography.

Mercator, Ortelius, and the Maturation of World Cartography

By the mid-sixteenth century, two Flemish cartographers, Gerardus Mercator and Abraham Ortelius, had systematized the new geographic knowledge. Mercator’s world map of 1569, drawn on what became known as the Mercator projection, was the first map designed specifically for marine navigation. Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570 was the first modern atlas, a systematic collection of maps of all the known regions of the world. Together, Mercator and Ortelius established the conventions of modern world cartography, and their work remained the standard reference for European geographers well into the eighteenth century. A Plural Inheritance

The “first accurate world maps” were therefore not the work of a single cartographer or a single culture. The mathematical framework came from the ancient Greeks, refined by the Islamic world; the empirical observations came from the Portuguese pilots and the great explorers of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; the cartographic skill came from the workshops of Florence, Nuremberg, Antwerp, and Amsterdam; and the printing press let disseminate the new maps widely. The result, by the early seventeenth century, was a body of world maps of remarkable accuracy that laid the foundation for the global geographic understanding of the modern era.
