Ships of the Age of Exploration: Caravels, Carracks, and Galleons
The great voyages of the Age of Exploration were made possible above all by the ships that carried them. Between roughly 1400 and 1600, European shipbuilders developed a family of sailing vessels — the caravel, the carrack, and the galleon — that combined maneuverability, cargo capacity, and seakeeping in ways no previous ships had matched. The argument of this page: the evolution from caravel to carrack to galleon was driven less by the demands of exploration than by the demands of armed oceanic commerce, and by the 1550s European ship design was shaped by naval warfare and the projection of state power as much as by the requirements of discovery. Richard Unger’s The Ship in the Medieval Economy, 600–1600 (1980) and Ships on Maps: Pictures of Power (2010) are the indispensable treatments of the technical and economic side, and John Keegan has written the most accessible account of the warships themselves.
The conventional story of the era presents the caravel, carrack, and galleon as a tidy evolution from small to large, from exploration to combat. The reality is more complicated. The caravel, the carrack, and the galleon coexisted for most of the period, and the design choices among them depended on the specific mission. A Portuguese India fleet in the 1530s might consist of carracks for the heavy transport, caravels for coastal scouting, and assorted smaller vessels for dispatch and harbor work. The transition from caravel to galleon was not a clean replacement but a slow shift in the dominant type, with carracks, caravels, and galleons all visible in the same harbors through the sixteenth century.
The Caravel: The Scout of the Atlantic
The caravel was a small, light, and highly maneuverable vessel developed in Portugal in the fifteenth century, drawing on the shipbuilding traditions of both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic coast. Caravels were typically 50 to 80 tons burden, with a length of around 20 to 30 meters, and they drew very little water — a critical feature for navigating the unfamiliar coastlines, river mouths, and shoals along the African shore. Their shallow draft, combined with their small size, made them ideal for the cautious, coast-hugging exploration pioneered by Prince Henry the Navigator and his pilots.
The most distinctive feature of the caravel was its rigging. While most European ships of the period carried square sails on one or two masts, caravels were often rigged with lateen sails — triangular sails set on long yards hung at an angle from the mast. Lateen sails allowed a ship to sail much closer to the wind than a square-rigged vessel, and to tack back and forth against the wind with remarkable agility. This was a decisive advantage on the African coast, where prevailing winds often blew from the south and explorers needed to work their way southward, against the wind, on legs of their voyages.
Later caravels, including those used in Columbus’s first voyage, carried a mixed rig: lateen sails on the foremast and mainmast, with a square sail on the mizzenmast. This combination combined both advantages: the ability to sail close to the wind when needed, and the ability to run before the wind at speed on the long Atlantic crossing. The Niña and the Pinta, two of Columbus’s three ships, were caravels of this type.
Bartolomeu Dias’s ship that rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 was a caravel. Vasco da Gama’s 1497 fleet to India included the Berrio, a small caravel that shaped the exploration of the East African coast. Portuguese caravels also explored the Brazilian coast in 1500 under Pedro Álvares Cabral. By the early sixteenth century, however, caravels were too small for the largest ocean-going voyages, and they gave way to larger vessels for major expeditions, though they were used as scouts, dispatch boats, and tenders throughout the century.
The Carrack: The Heavy Transporter
The carrack was the great ocean-going vessel of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Carracks were large, multi-decked ships — typically 400 to 1,000 tons burden, with the very largest examples (such as the Madre de Deus) reaching perhaps 1,500 tons — with high forecastles and sterncastles, three or four masts, and a combination of square and lateen sails. They were the principal vessels of the transoceanic fleets of Portugal and Spain in the early Age of Exploration, and they could carry enormous cargoes, large crews, and substantial armament across the world’s oceans.
The typical carrack had a high, bulky hull pierced with gun ports, allowing it to carry heavy cannons in broadside batteries. Its towering forecastle and sterncastle gave defenders a height advantage in boarding actions, and its deep keel provided the stability needed to carry heavy cargoes on long voyages. Carracks typically carried 200 to 400 crew, including sailors, soldiers, gunners, and officers. The Santa María, Christopher Columbus’s flagship in 1492, was a small carrack of about 130 tons. Vasco da Gama’s flagships on his 1497 voyage to India, the São Gabriel and the São Rafael, were carracks of about 170 tons — small by the standards of the type, but typical for the cautious early voyages.
After the opening of the Cape route to India, carracks became the workhorses of the Portuguese Carreira da Índia — the annual fleets that carried spices, textiles, and other Asian goods back to Lisbon. The carracks of the Carreira were armed fortresses, capable of fighting off attacks by smaller vessels and of projecting Portuguese power along the coasts of Africa, Arabia, and India. The greatest of these vessels, the Madre de Deus, captured by an English fleet under Sir Walter Raleigh off the Azores in 1592, was so richly laden that it became legendary for its cargo of spices, jewels, and gold. The earlier Portuguese carrack Flor do Mar, lost with all hands in a storm off Sumatra in 1511, was similarly fabled for the wealth of Malacca it was carrying; it was never captured by the English.
The carrack’s reign at the top of European shipbuilding was relatively brief. By the mid-sixteenth century, the type was being supplanted by a sleeker, lower, and more heavily armed vessel: the galleon. The transition is treated in more detail on our carrack long-tail page.
The Galleon: The Warship of Empire
The galleon emerged in the early sixteenth century as a response to the limitations of the carrack. Galleons were lower in the hull than carracks, with slimmer profiles, reduced forecastles and sterncastles, and longer, more effective gun decks. They combined substantial cargo capacity with heavy armament, and they could be built in large numbers, in standardized designs, and maintained by the great state navies of Europe. The galleon became the principal warship and armed merchant of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and early eighteenth centuries.
The Spanish galleon fleet system, the Carrera de Indias, connected Seville with Veracruz and Portobello for two centuries, and galleons such as the San Martín de Agurto and the Santa Ana of 1588 were among the most powerful warships of the age. The famous Manila galleons, which sailed annually between Acapulco and Manila from 1565 to 1815, were the workhorses of the trans-Pacific silver trade, carrying Chinese silks, porcelain, and spices west to Mexico, and American silver east to Asia.
The English, Dutch, and French navies all adopted variants of the galleon in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. English ships of the Elizabethan era, including the queen’s flagship Ark Royal and Sir Francis Drake’s Revenge, played important roles in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The Dutch and English East India Companies built large fleets of East Indiamen — heavily armed merchant galleons that could fight off both European rivals and local opponents. Louis XIV’s French navy built some of the largest and most heavily armed galleons of the late seventeenth century.
The galleon was, in the strict sense, a warship, and its development was driven by the demands of naval warfare. The long gun deck, the broadside battery, and the standardized design were all responses to the requirements of fleet combat. The economic historian John Guilmartin’s Gunpowder and Galleons: Changing Technology and Mediterranean Warfare at Sea in the 16th Century (2003) makes the case that the galleon was the product of the gunpowder revolution at sea, and that the European advantage in naval gunnery was a decisive cause of the European conquest of the Americas and of European dominance in Asian waters.
Rigging, Sails, and the Art of Steering
The ships of the Age of Exploration were not just hulls; they were complex combinations of hull, masts, sails, and steering gear. The development of the full-rigged ship, with three masts each carrying multiple square sails, gave European ships a level of speed and reliability that no previous vessel had matched. The introduction of the stern-mounted rudder (transmitted to Atlantic Europe from the Mediterranean in the twelfth century) gave captains precise control over their course, and the gradual evolution of rigging from simple square sails to complex combinations of square, lateen, and fore-and-aft sails allowed ships to make use of wind from many directions.
The development of the stern-mounted rudder, hung on a sternpost and controlled by a tiller or whipstaff, was one of the most important advances in European shipbuilding. Combined with a deep keel and a balanced hull form, the stern rudder allowed ships to be steered accurately on long ocean passages, even in heavy weather. Earlier Mediterranean ships had used side-mounted steering oars, which were less effective and easily damaged.
The Role of Pilots and Masters
A ship of the Age of Exploration was only as good as the people sailing it. The pilot, often a specialist in navigation, was responsible for the course of the ship and for consulting charts, instruments, and sailing directions. The master, often a merchant or sea captain, was responsible for the handling of the ship and the management of the crew. The two worked closely together, and their cooperation — and sometimes their rivalry — shaped the experience of every voyage. Smaller Vessels and Support Ships
The great ships of the era did not sail alone. Fleets of the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries typically included various vessels: the great carrack or galleon as the flagship, smaller caravels as scouts, and many support vessels including barcas, foists, and tenders. On long voyages, ships often needed to put into port for repairs, reprovisioning, and crew changes, and the support fleet was essential to keeping the expedition functioning. Columbus’s three ships in 1492, for example, were a small carrack, a caravel, and a second caravel — a mix of types that became standard for ocean voyages of the era.
Sails, Cordage, and Ship’s Boats
The auxiliary equipment of an Age of Exploration ship was itself a major industry. Sails were made of woven flax or hemp, sometimes reinforced with leather patches at points of strain. Rope and cordage, made of hemp from Russia, Italy, or the Balkans, was used for rigging, anchors, and a hundred other purposes. Each ship carried several boats — longboats, pinnaces, and skiffs — for use in harbor, in calm weather, and in emergency. The loss of a longboat in a storm could cripple a ship, and the management of small boats was an important part of the captain’s responsibility.
Shipbuilding Centers and the Geography of the Trade
The major shipbuilding centers of the Age of Exploration were located along the coasts and rivers of Europe, with easy access to timber and other shipbuilding materials. Lisbon, with its protected harbor on the Tagus, was the great Portuguese shipbuilding center. The Basque shipyards of the Spanish north coast, especially Bilbao and Santander, supplied much of the Spanish Atlantic fleet. Venice, Genoa, and other Italian ports built Mediterranean vessels. The English shipyards of the Thames, the Southampton Water, and the River Medway built vessels for the English navy and merchant fleet. The Dutch shipyards of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and the Zaan region became the most productive in Europe in the seventeenth century, supplying the great fleets of the Dutch East India Company.
The Legacy of the Age of Exploration Ship
The ships of the Age of Exploration carried the explorers, missionaries, and merchants who linked the continents. They enabled the great trading empires of Portugal, Spain, England, the Netherlands, and France, and they were the instruments by which the resources of the Americas, Africa, and Asia were integrated into the European economy. The transatlantic slave trade, the silver trade, and the spice trade all depended on these ships.
The caravel, the carrack, and the galleon also shaped the technology that followed. The full-rigged ship, the ship of the line, the East Indiaman, and even the early steamships of the nineteenth century all descended from the hull forms, rigging, and piloting practices of the Age of Exploration. The deep keel, the broadside gun deck, the multi-masted rig, the stern-mounted rudder — all became standard features of European naval architecture for centuries. The era’s shipbuilders were the engineers of the modern world, and the vessels they produced were the working machines of European empire.
